# AI-Designed Vaccine Passes First Human Trial at Cambridge

> A vaccine whose active ingredient was designed entirely by AI has cleared its first test in humans. Researchers at the University of Cambridge ran a Phase 1 trial with 39 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 50 and reported no significant adverse effects, alongside immune responses against SARS-CoV-2, the original SARS virus, and related bat coronaviruses. The breadth of that response is the point. Rather than targeting a single strain, the team is chasing a more universal design that could blunt future outbreaks before a new virus has fully arrived, and delivery is needle-free, using a microfluidic jet instead of a syringe. This is early, and Phase 1 mainly proves safety rather than real-world protection, with a Phase 2 study still to come. But it is a concrete milestone for AI in drug design, moving computational protein work out of the lab and into an actual clinical result. If later trials hold up, AI-designed biologics could speed how quickly the world responds to emerging pathogens.
