# Anthropic embeds invisible watermarks in all Claude-generated text

> Anthropic says every Claude model released after August 2 now stamps an invisible statistical watermark into the text it produces, making it the first major lab to do this for writing rather than just images or video. The mark is woven across the Claude Platform API, the Claude apps, Claude Code, Cowork, and Tag, and it is designed to survive being copied and pasted, and to hold up under light editing. The immediate driver is regulatory. The EU AI Act's transparency code is pushing providers to make AI-generated and AI-edited content identifiable, and a durable watermark is the cleanest way to answer that demand at scale. It also hands schools, publishers, and platforms a potential tool for telling machine text from human text without relying on the flaky detectors that have embarrassed everyone so far. The honest caveat is that statistical watermarking is a probabilistic signal, not a fingerprint. Heavy rewriting, translation, or laundering through another model can weaken it, and adversaries will test exactly those seams. Still, a frontier lab voluntarily marking its own output sets a precedent the rest of the industry will be pressured to match.
