# Cambridge AI-designed vaccine passes first human trials

> Researchers at the University of Cambridge report that a vaccine whose active component was designed entirely by computer has passed its first human safety trial, a milestone for AI-driven drug design. In a 39-person study, the AI-engineered antigen proved safe with no significant side effects, and it triggered immune responses not just against SARS-CoV-2 but also against SARS and bat coronaviruses that have not yet infected people. The goal is broad protection across the entire Sarbecovirus family, the group of coronaviruses seen as most likely to spill over into humans in a future pandemic. Instead of tailoring a shot to one known virus, the team used simulation to design an immunogen aimed at features shared across many related viruses. Just as striking is the speed. The project went from concept to completed safety testing in under three years. If later trials hold up, computational design could compress vaccine timelines and let scientists prepare for threats before they emerge, rather than scrambling after an outbreak begins.
