# DARPA and US Air Force Successfully Fly F-16 Fighter Jet Under Full AI Control

> DARPA and the US Air Force say they have flown an F-16 fighter jet under full AI control, using a system called the VENOM Autonomy Kit that lets an artificial-intelligence agent take the controls of a real, operational aircraft. Pilots can flip a switch to hand control to the AI or take it back, so a human stays in the loop even during autonomous flight. The program, whose first real-world autonomous flight was announced on July 16 with testing still ongoing, is not really about replacing pilots in a single jet. The goal is to prove that AI can coordinate teams of uncrewed aircraft flying alongside crewed ones, a concept the Air Force sees as central to future air combat. Moving autonomy from simulators onto a live fighter is a meaningful step, and a sobering one. The same advances that make consumer AI agents useful are now being validated in weapons systems, which raises the stakes on questions of reliability, control, and accountability.
