# EU AI Act enforcement begins with new transparency rules August 2

> A major slice of the European Union's AI Act just became enforceable. As of August 2, systems that talk to people have to say they are AI, deepfakes and other synthetic media have to be labeled, and machine-generated content needs machine-readable markers so it can be traced downstream. The goal is simple to state: people should know when they are dealing with a machine or with something a machine made. The teeth are real. Non-compliance can draw fines of up to 15 million euros or 3 percent of global annual turnover, and the European Commission now has formal power to investigate providers of general-purpose AI models and enforce their obligations directly. There is a grace period, with providers of models launched before August 2025 given until 2027 to comply. Still, this marks the point where the world's most ambitious AI rulebook stops being theory.
