# EU Enforces AI Act Transparency Requirements

> A new set of transparency rules under the EU's AI Act took effect on August 2, and they change what AI has to tell you about itself. Chatbots now have to disclose that you are talking to a machine, and AI-generated content like deepfakes and other synthetic media must carry machine-readable marks identifying it as artificial. The teeth are financial. Noncompliance can bring fines of up to 15 million euros or 3 percent of a company's worldwide turnover, which is enough to get large platforms to pay attention. Content published before August 2 is exempt, so there is no retroactive scramble to label old material.
