# EU Orders Google to Open Android to Rival AI Assistants Under DMA

> The European Commission has told Google to open Android to rival AI assistants, issuing binding decisions on July 16 under the Digital Markets Act. By August 2027, competing assistants must be able to use voice activation and work across apps through eleven Android feature groups, the kind of system-level access Google has reserved for its own tools. The order goes further than interoperability. Starting January 2027, Google will have to share anonymized search data, including ranking signals, queries, clicks, and views, with competitors on fair and reasonable terms, handing rivals ingredients that have been nearly impossible to replicate from scratch. The Commission is framing this as its largest AI-specific intervention so far, and a formal compliance order is expected by July 27. The bet is that forcing open the defaults and the data will let smaller assistants actually reach users, though how much room they gain will depend heavily on how the technical access is implemented.
