# Federal appeals court overturns Amazon ban on Perplexity AI shopping agents

> A US federal appeals court has handed Perplexity a significant win, ruling that Amazon is unlikely to succeed in its effort to bar Perplexity's AI shopping agents from the retailer's platform. Amazon had won a temporary injunction in March by arguing the agents violated federal anti-hacking law, but the court was unpersuaded on both jurisdiction and intent. The reasoning is what makes this one worth watching. The judges drew a line between the AI company and the user, concluding that when an agent shops on someone's behalf, it is the person, not Perplexity, performing the access. That framing treats the agent as a tool the user wields rather than an independent intruder. This appears to be the first federal appeals ruling on whether AI agents acting for users can legally reach into online platforms, and the logic could ripple far beyond shopping. If agents are extensions of their users, the terms-of-service and access-control fights that platforms have leaned on start to look very different. Expect other retailers and gatekeepers to test where exactly that line falls.
