# How People Actually Use AI: The AI Observatory Reveals What Companies Hide

> How do people really use AI chatbots? The companies publish their own usage reports, but as MIT Technology Review notes, almost none of it can be independently verified. To close that gap, Stanford researchers built an AI Observatory and analyzed 24,521 real conversations across 52 models from 2023 to 2025, and the picture that emerges is markedly different from the official one. Applying Anthropic's own methodology, the researchers found that 48% of conversations fall outside work-related categories, far more personal use than the tidy productivity narrative suggests. The starkest gaps appear in sensitive areas that company filters tend to obscure: health and relationships showed up at 44% versus a reported 31%, and categories like harassment, sexual content, and adult material appeared several times more often than official figures imply. The study also found distinct personalities of use, with one model leaned on for news despite concentrated misinformation, another for social roleplay, and another for homework. The significance is accountability. If the public only sees vendor-curated statistics, independent measurement like this is the only way to understand what these tools are actually doing in people's lives.
