# McKinsey Survey: 32% of Enterprises Skip SaaS Due to Agentic Coding Tools

> A new McKinsey survey of 1,719 business leaders points to a quiet shift in how companies buy software. Nearly a third, 32 percent, say they skipped purchasing at least one software product or feature over the past year because they could just build it themselves using agentic coding tools. In other words, the classic build-versus-buy calculation is tilting toward build as AI lowers the cost of writing custom functionality in-house. The report also finds that 40 percent of large enterprises are now scaling AI agents in one or more business functions, up from 27 percent a year earlier. Taken together, the numbers hint at a real threat to the software-as-a-service model that has defined enterprise tech for two decades. If a marketing team can spin up its own tool in an afternoon, the vendor that used to sell that tool has a harder pitch to make. It is early, and surveys measure intent as much as action, but the direction is worth watching.
