# MIT launches the LLM Election Observatory to track how AI models answer political questions

> As more voters treat chatbots as a first stop for information about candidates and ballot measures, a natural worry follows: do these systems answer political questions the same way for everyone, and do their answers lean in a consistent direction? MIT researchers have built a public dashboard, the LLM Election Observatory, to find out. The project monitors how nearly a dozen leading AI models respond to political queries in the run-up to the 2026 US midterms, letting anyone compare how the systems handle the same prompts. Because each model is trained and tuned differently, they can diverge sharply on contested topics, and those differences are largely invisible to the people relying on them. The significance is less about catching any single model in a gotcha and more about accountability. If AI is quietly becoming election infrastructure, having an independent, ongoing record of what these tools actually say gives researchers, journalists, and voters a way to spot patterns before they harden into influence.
