# OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens With Age-Gated Safety Features

> OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a version of the assistant aimed at users aged 13 to 17 with a tighter set of guardrails. It blocks content involving suicide, self-harm and sexual material, and ships with a Study Mode that walks students through homework step by step instead of just handing over answers. An automatic age-detection system tries to route minors into the safer experience, and parents get their own controls. The move arrives, as the company's own critics note, years after teenagers were already among ChatGPT's heaviest users, and directly in the shadow of lawsuits alleging the chatbot contributed to teen mental health harms. In other words, this is as much a legal and reputational fix as a product update. The open question is enforcement. Age detection is notoriously easy to fool, and safeguards that route on a guess only work if the guess is right. Still, formalizing a teen tier sets an expectation other assistant makers will now be pressed to match.
