# OpenAI Retires Atlas Browser, Folds Capabilities Into ChatGPT Work

> OpenAI is retiring Atlas, its standalone web browser, not long after launching it. The company announced on July 9 that Atlas will shut down on August 9, and that its browser automation and agentic features will move into a new product called ChatGPT Work, aimed at Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers on web and mobile. The consolidation goes further than the browser. OpenAI is also folding features from its Codex desktop app into a single unified ChatGPT desktop application, promising better handling of tabs, downloads and account logins along the way. In effect, the separate apps are collapsing into one agent that can act across the things you already do. Killing a shipping product this fast is a striking admission that a dedicated AI browser was the wrong shape. The bet now is that browsing is a capability, not a destination, and that users would rather have an assistant reach into the web than switch to a new browser to get it.
