# Panic builds over bankrupt Spirit’s looming data sale to Google

> When a company goes bankrupt, its assets get sold off to pay creditors, and increasingly one of the most valuable assets is data. That is the fight brewing over Spirit, whose looming sale of customer data to Google has advocates alarmed. Their rallying cry captures the stakes, that bankruptcy cannot become the new land grab for AI. The worry is about precedent. People handed over their information to one company under one set of promises, and bankruptcy proceedings can quietly transfer that data to a very different buyer with very different plans, in this case one of the largest AI developers in the world. There is little customers can do once their data becomes a line item on a balance sheet. If courts treat personal information as just another asset to be auctioned, then every failing company becomes a potential pipeline of training data and user records into the hands of whoever bids highest. That is why this otherwise dry bankruptcy detail is drawing real panic.
