# Shopify Reports AI Search Tripling Traffic and Orders Year-Over-Year

> The fear that AI chatbots would gut traditional online shopping is not showing up in Shopify's numbers. The company says AI-attributed traffic and orders to its merchants' stores tripled year over year in the second quarter, and, crucially, it came alongside growth in ordinary search rather than at its expense. Conventional search sessions actually rose over the past two years. The behavior behind the numbers is worth noting. Half of AI-referred visits land straight on a product page, about 2.5 times the rate of traditional search, suggesting shoppers arrive with intent already formed by the chatbot. Even better for the little guy, roughly 75 percent of AI-driven purchases fell outside the top 100 product categories, meaning smaller and more niche merchants are the ones getting found. Shopify framed all of this while reporting a strong quarter, with revenue up 36 percent to $3.6 billion. The takeaway is that AI search may be less a replacement for Google than a new front door that happens to favor discovery of the long tail.
