# Stanford AI Index 2026 reports 53% population-level adoption of generative AI in 3 years

> Stanford's 2026 AI Index puts a number on something everyone already felt: generative AI reached 53 percent of the population within three years of ChatGPT's debut, spreading faster than either the personal computer or the internet did at comparable stages. Adoption inside companies climbed even higher, to 88 percent. The money side is just as lopsided.
