# Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for $7B+, Model Routing Becomes Infrastructure

> Stripe has agreed to buy OpenRouter for more than 7 billion dollars, a striking move for a company best known as payments plumbing. OpenRouter runs a gateway that lets developers reach and switch between more than 400 large language models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and others through a single interface, becoming a kind of universal adapter for the model layer. The price tells a story. It is roughly a 5.4 times markup on the 1.3 billion dollar valuation OpenRouter carried in its May Series B, and even that sits below the roughly 10 billion figure floated in earlier July talks. Buyers are clearly willing to pay a premium to own the connective tissue of AI, not just a single model. The logic is that Stripe wants to sit in the same position for AI that it holds for online payments: the default rail everyone routes through. If businesses increasingly meter and bill AI usage the way they bill transactions, owning both the payment layer and the model-routing layer starts to look less like a stretch and more like a land grab on the next piece of internet infrastructure.
