# Tether Releases TranslatePsy-AfriSLM for 19 African Languages

> Tether, better known for its stablecoin, has released TranslatePsy-AfriSLM, a family of open source translation models covering 19 Sub-Saharan languages including Hausa, Swahili, Yoruba, Amharic and Zulu. The models are tiny, between 21 and 35 MB, small enough to run entirely offline on a phone with no cloud connection and no data leaving the device. The headline claim is that the smallest 800M parameter version outperforms far larger systems like Qwen3.5 and a 27B translation model on the FLORES-200 benchmark, a result Tether credits to aggressive data filtering that stripped 96 percent of low quality examples from a 215M sentence training set. Why it matters: most machine translation still assumes fast internet and a data center, which leaves many African languages poorly served. Shipping capable models that fit on a cheap handset, work offline, and keep conversations private is a genuinely different approach, and an unusual move from a crypto company.
