# Who's Afraid of Chinese Models?

> In a July 20 Stratechery essay, Ben Thompson takes on the growing anxiety over Chinese open-weight models and argues that US frontier labs are worrying about the wrong thing. His view is that Chinese models are becoming good enough and can freely distill from Western ones, which threatens the differentiation labs have counted on, but that panic and restriction are not the answer. If models commoditize, Thompson reasons, value stops accruing to whoever has the best weights and shifts instead toward those who own the compute and the customer touchpoints.
